چکیده

The gastric output of bicarbonate and prostaglandin E2 has been calculated using a perfusion technique before and after instillation of 100 mM hydrochloric acid into the stomach of seven healthy volunteers. A significant increase in bicarbonate output occurred from 258±38 [tmol/3() min during the basal period to 531±86 [tmol/3() min after return of the intragastric pH to neutral (p<()0()5). Prostaglandin E2 output also increased significantly from 410±136 pmol/30 min to 1002±194 pmol/30 min (p<()-05). The changes were caused mainly by an increase in gastric secretory volume with only non-significant increases in concentrations of bicarbonate and prostaglandin E,. The results suggest that mechanisms exist to adjust the rate of gastric bicarbonate secretion to the prevailing intraluminal pH and that this may occur through the release of prostaglandin E,.

Exocrine secretory responses of the pancreas to insulin and to a meat meal in dogs.

Studies in five dogs with chronic pancreatic and gastric fistulae have shown that insulin-induced vagal stimulation of the pancreas (gastric fistula open) resulted in protein and bicarbonate outputs very much smaller than those obtained with a 400-g meat meal. However, when the insulin-activated gastric acid secretion was allowed access to the duodenum (gastric fistula closed) peak outputs of b...

Omeprazole promotes proximal duodenal mucosal bicarbonate secretion in humans.

The proton pump inhibitor, omeprazole, surprisingly resulted in higher rates of proximal duodenal mucosal bicarbonate secretion than previously reported using an H2 receptor antagonist for gastric acid inhibition. Gastroduodenal perfusions were performed in healthy volunteers to evaluate whether this incidental finding is explained by more potent gastric acid inhibition by omeprazole or might b...

Effect of ranitidine on basal and bicarbonate enhanced intragastric PCO2: a tonometric study.

A high intragastric PCO2 (iPCO2), determined tonometrically, is the main factor participating in a low gastric intramucosal pH (pHi) and may point to gastric mucosal ischaemia. iPCO2 might also increase, however, after buffering of gastric acid by bicarbonate; the magnitude of this effect and the efficacy of H2 blockers to prevent it are unclear. Ten healthy volunteers (20-24 years) were studie...

Hydrogen sulfide upregulated mRNA expressions of sodium bicarbonate cotransporter1, trefoil factor1 and trefoil factor2 in gastric mucosa in rats

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been shown to protect the gastric mucosa through several protective mechanisms but till now its effect on mRNA expression of sodium bicarbonate cotransporter 1 (NBC1), trefoil factor1 (TFF1) and trefoil factor2 (TFF2) was not investigated. This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of H2S on mRNA expression of NBC1, TFF1 and TFF2 in rat gastric ...

Gastric acid and salivary bicarbonate. Is there a relationship in duodenal ulcer patients?

PURPOSE Since saliva protects the oesophageal and oral mucosa against hydrogen ions, the aim of the study was to establish the relationship between the secretion of gastric acid and salivary bicarbonate. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study involved 43 Helicobacter pylori positive duodenal ulcer patients receiving: 1. omeprazole alone (O), 2. omeprazole and amoxicillin (OA) or 3. omeprazole, amoxic...
